A What's New From Diane

I forget which book that I read (one of the reserve books) that talked about how when we learn something new, something else will be forgotten. There is technology today that goes beyond just putting texts online, but they will also create your bibliography for you. This indicates to me that someday we will forget how to manually cite our papers in APA (or the other one) format. This is a relatively new program caleed RefWorks that costs a lot of money right now, but colleges buy it for their students. RefWorks takes a lot of work out of writing papers. Here's the description that I put on the website I manage.

RefWorks (www.refworks.com)is an online research management and bibliography creator service. RefWorks enables users to export records from online databases to generate bibliographies for research projects in the appropriate citation style. For users this means being able to export records directly from online journal services such as EBSCOhost, InfoTrac and ProQuest, having the records automatically organized in APA format and then arranged as a bibliography, ready to be appended to a research paper. This eliminates the need for retyping citation information and searching through the APA Publication Manual as you format each citation in your project bibliographies, saving you time and greatly decreasing the likelihood of errors.

RefWorks allows you to store an unlimited number of records in a personal database that can be organized, sorted and searched. Individual folders can be created for each of your unique research projects for ease of management. Because the service is Web-based, you may access your personal citation database at any time and from any Internet-connected computer. Bibliographies can easily be imported into documents you have created using a word processor such as Microsoft Word.

MALS last class

MALS last class

Well, I finally found were I wrote down my username and password :)

In the October 2006 Family Circle magazine, there is an article titled "generation RUDE". I discusses that development of social lives revolving around the new media. It emphasizes that the means of communication throughout cyberspace creates the anonymity that Gauntlett mentions in chapter 2. Because our youth never see the people they are talking with, it empowers them to be as rude as they want to be. Without the face to face interpersonal relationship practice they often do not develop manners that are not intuitive to teens. This article reinforces to parents that teens should be reminded that every message leaves a trail that could come back to them. Therefore, reinforcing the teen that there is no such thing as anonymity

The article also informs the reader that " 75% of teens on line IM compared to 42% of adults"

Personally, I think this really hinders social and communication development in our young adults. It also teaches about keeping up with fast pace conversation, especially when there are more than one IMs going on at a time. Overall, the speed of the internet and the rate of information available has caused us to become intolerant to waiting. I think our youth will be most effected with this.
